Twenty-four year-old Bass-Baritone Mats Roolvink is a member of the 2022-2023 Opera Studio at the Staatstheater Nuremberg. The Dutch-American young singer comes from a multi-cultural and multi-ethnic background and is equally versatile in Opera, Baroque, Lied, and Jazz.
Mats will be making his opera debut this November at the World Premiere of Turing, a production by Staatstheater Nuremberg.
As a Masterclass Scholarship recipient, Mats has performed on the concert stages of Bayreuth Festival as well as the Opera Gala Festival of Oper Oder-Spree in Germany with the Prussian Chamber Orchestra conducted by Vinzenze Weisenberger.
On the Baroque front, Mats has participated and performed in masterclasses with leading Baroque artists such as Paul Agnew at Les Arts Florissants, Vivica Genaux at Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Peter Kooij at Le Concert Lorraine, and Linoel Meunier of Vox Luminis. Mats' early music repertoire include Handel, Bach, Purcell, Montiverdi, as well as some of the Renaissance masters.
Since 2017, Mats has performed extensively as a member of Salzburger BachChor on the stages of Salzburg Festival with leading composers such as Christian Thielemann, Ricardo Multi, Alondra de la Parra in opera productions ranging from Lohengrin, Tosca, Aida, and THAMOS. Concert performance included Haydn's Creation and Mahler's Das Klagende Lied.
Mats studied Gesang at Mozarteum University Salzburg with Professors Andreas Macco and Barbara Bonney. He will be embarking on a Master's degree in Opera Studies at HFM Nuremberg this upcoming season.
Born in Singapore to Dutch and Chinese American parents, he completed the final two years of high school at Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Boston before moving to Europe to further his vocal studies. Besides English, Mats is fluent in Dutch, German, and also speaks basic Italian, Mandarin and Japanese. Mats has performed in countries across 3 continents including USA, Japan, Singapore, Germany, Austria, Italy, France, and Netherlands.
