Mats is a 22-year-old rising Dutch-American Bass-Baritone studying at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. He is the 2019-2020 Winner of the American Prize in Art Song & Oratorio (College Division), 3rd Prize Winner at the 2019 Neapolitan Masters Competition Young Singers Category in Naples Italy, and a Finalist at the 2020 American Vocal Arts International Collegiate Singing Competition.
Mats received a full scholarship to attend the 2020 Oper Oder-Spree Opera Workshop in Beeskow Germany. He also received a full scholarship in 2019 to attend Manchester Music Festival’s Stratton Mountain Vocal Workshop in Vermont USA with Maestro Warren Jones.
In Summer 2019, Mats made his operatic debut at Lyric Opera Studio Weimar’s production of Le Nozze di Figaro, playing the title role. In 2020, he attended a Masterclass with Peter Kooij at Le Concert Lorraine, performing as a Johannes Passion soloist at the Arsenal Metz in France.
As a member of the Salzburger BachChor, Mats has performed in the ensemble of Salzburg Easter Festival’s productions of Tosca with Christian Thielemann and Anja Harteros, as well as in the ensemble of Mozart Week’s THAMOS with Rene Pape and Alondra de lar Parra, both held at the Salzburg Festspielehaus.
Other Masterclass teachers include Thomas Hampson at BUTI, Don Marrazzo at Magreet Honiq Summer Academy, Karlheinz Hanser at Academia Vocalis, Stephen West at Bel Canto Academy Florence.
Born in Singapore, Mats joined the school choir in 2008, performing in various school musicals and concerts in Singapore. Mats started opera training in 2013. From 2014 to 2016, he studied at the Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Boston with Ms. Angela Gooch and Mr. Gary Durham.
Mats is the Winner of Classical Music for 16-18 age group at the National Association of Teachers for Singing (NATS) Massachusetts State in 2014 and came in 2nd at the Peter Elvins Vocal Competition Teen Division in 2016. He is also one of the 2016 Top 40 US High School Classical Singers.
Mats has performed in recitals around the world including Germany, Austria, Italy, Netherlands, Japan, and USA. He held his first solo recital at the Esplanade Recital Studio in Singapore for over 200 guests with the guest of honor being the Ambassador of Netherlands in June 2015 and again in February 2018.
