Mats is a 22-year-old award-winning Dutch-American Bass-Baritone studying at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg. He is the 2020 Winner of the American Prize in Art Song & Oratorio (College Division), 3rd Prize Winner at the 2019 Neapolitan Masters Competition Young Singers Category in Naples Italy, and a Finalist at the 2020 American Vocal Arts International Collegiate Singing Competition.
Mats is the recipient of two full scholarships to attend the 2020 & 2021 Oper Oder-Spree Summer Opera Workshop in Beeskow Germany. He also received a full scholarship in 2019 to attend Manchester Music Festival’s Stratton Mountain Vocal Workshop in Vermont USA with Maestro Warren Jones.
Highlights of Mats' career include his 2019 operatic debut at Lyric Opera Studio Weimar’s production of Le Nozze di Figaro, playing the title role. In 2020, he made his concert debut with The Prussian Chamber Orchestra at Kloster Neuzelle and Burg Beeskow Germany. In the same year, he performed as a Johannes Passion soloist at the Arsenal Metz in France. with Le Concert Lorrain.
As a member of the Salzburger BachChor, Mats has performed in the ensemble of Salzburg Easter Festival’s productions of Tosca with Christian Thielemann and Anja Harteros, as well as in the ensemble of Mozart Week’s THAMOS with Rene Pape and Alondra de lar Parra, both held at the Salzburg Festspielehaus.
Other Masterclass teachers include Peter Kooij at Le Concert Lorrain Baroque Academy, Thomas Hampson at BUTI, Don Marrazzo at Magreet Honiq Summer Academy, Karlheinz Hanser at Academia Vocalis, Stephen West at Bel Canto Academy Florence.
Born in Singapore, Mats joined the school choir in 2008, performing in various school musicals and concerts in Singapore. Mats started opera training in 2013. From 2014 to 2016, he studied at the Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Boston with Ms. Angela Gooch and Mr. Gary Durham.
Mats is the Winner of Classical Music for 16-18 age group at the National Association of Teachers for Singing (NATS) Massachusetts State in 2014 and came in 2nd at the Peter Elvins Vocal Competition Teen Division in 2016. He is also one of the 2016 Top 40 US High School Classical Singers.
Mats has performed in concerts and recitals around the world. Most recently, he performed with the Prussian Chamber Orchestra in Burg Kloster Neuzelle and Burg Beeskow Germany. He has also sung in recitals in USA, Austria, France, Italy, Netherlands, Japan, and Singapore. He held his first solo recital at the Esplanade Recital Studio in Singapore for over 200 guests with the guest of honor being the Ambassador of Netherlands in June 2015 and again in February 2018.
